Perceiving surfaces and materials.
When we open our eyes we gain access to a world of meaningful sensations. Consider this. On the one hand, visual experience consists of much more than disjointed lines or colours: our sensations are organized into discrete, recognizable bodies. On the other hand, there is much more to seeing than mere object recognition: we don't experience the world as abstract labels devoid of volume or presence. Instead, what we see is a luscious environment of forms and textures, risks and pleasures, causes and effects. Through our eyes we can perceive the viscosity of albumen, the detailed folds in a silk drape, the gleam of pearl or the buoyency of smoke. Often, through the faculty of sight alone, we discern what something would feel like were we to touch it, whether it would be hard or soft, friable of malleable, wet, dry or tacky to the touch. These are the species of sensation that I seek to understand.
