My job is to administrate our department's network. I accomplish this task together with Walter Heinz and Reinhard Feiler.

What is a network?

A network consists of several components which - when "networked" - provide their full benefit. These components are:

  • active network components, which connect our department to the campus network and to the outside world
  • the servers, which are currently running FreeBSD, IRIX, Linux, NetBSD and Windows and that provide various services to our department
  • the workstations running IRIX, Linux, MacOS X and Windows
  • the network printers, including our 3D modeller
  • tape drives for backups
  • RAID storage systems for data that must be available all the time
  • scanners for capturing documents
  • our Dual Opteron cluster for applications that require computing power
